Remember that the 5 themes notes should be completed by Friday!

If the three days we have spent in the library is not enough time and you would like to work more on the assignment at home, here is a link to the JFK Library webpage.

Please remember to cite your sources in your bibliography as you take your notes. Also, please remember that I only want you to use Ms. Mack's geography links if you want to use websites. If you want to use CountryReports, remember that the school login is: jfkms and the password is: library.

On Friday, we will be using a web 2.0 tool called Glogster. If you would like to explore that site before Friday, then create an account for yourself and play around with the site on your own.

There is no homework, in honor of Rosh Hashanah. To all who celebrate the Jewish holidays, Happy New Year- Shana Tova!

An important current event from the Middle East region- in Saudi Arabia, women were just give the right to vote.

 

NPR: Mideast Water Crisis Brings Misery, Uncertainty

On Thursday we will explore the Geography theme of Human Environmental Interaction (HEI) as we listen to two audio reports from National Public Radio.

The first program is called Mideast Water Crisis Brings Misery, Uncertainty.

The second radio program is called Tide of Arab Turk Tension Rises Amid Water Shortage.

We will listen to each program two times for content and comprehension, create a cause and effect flow chart, as we consider the theme of Human Environmental Interaction:

How do people rely on the environment in the region? How do people adapt to the environment? What are the challenges the environment in the region presents to human life?

Learning Objectives

1)   Locate and print out a magazine article from the JFK Library website

2)   Understand how to cite a magazine article in a bibliography

3)   Select a relevant article about a component of culture, read it and write a short summary

Steps for completion:

1. Follow the instructions for going onto the JFK library web page
2. Select Databases
3. Select Infotrac K-12 Junior Edition
4. Put in your subject in the search bar  (for example: Iran) and check "magazine"
5. Find any article that is about the HUMAN CHARACTERISTICS of the country that looks interesting to you. Remember the CULTURE WEBS we made in class yesterday- your article should have to do with one of the aspects of culture.
6. Select the article and print it out.
7. Read the article carefully.
8. On the top of your paper, write a proper citation for the article.
9. Write a one paragraph summary of the article.

Library Orientation Continues

This week we will cover the second part of the JFK Library Orientation by exploring the collection of databases that our library offers you for research in any academic area. Ms. Olender, the librarian, will walk classes through using the Database section of the new JFK Library website, and you will pracice using it by locating a relevant article, writing an article summary and writing a correct citation for the article. If you have some time, you are free to use the links above to explore the JFK Library website on your own.

Library: Bibliographies

You did a terrific job in the library today learning how to use the JFK library's new website and reviewing academic integrity and how to format a bibliography. Please see the page on the left hand side called "Bibliography Format" if you need a model to follow as you format your bibliography at anytime this year. Tomorrow we will be back in the library to do a small bit of research on the physical features of the Middle East. The purpose of the work is to familairize yourself with the physical features of the area, to navigate the JFK library and to properly format a bibliography.

This is work to be done with me in class, not for homework. The only homework is the study for your test on Friday!

 

Reminder: test on Friday!

Please remember to study each night for the Middle East geography test on Friday. Use the geography games and the flashcards linked below to help you prepare. I also have blank maps in my classroom should you prefer pencil and paper- jsut come and ask for one!  Remember, the test will look like the map on the study guide and there will be a word bank.

Geography Test Next Friday

Reminder- there will be a test of the 14 countries and capitals in the Middle East next Friday, September 16th. Use the study guide I handed out in class to prepare. Please try and study for at least 10 minutes a night.
